A Message from the Crew Advisor

My name is Tony Moller, and I am the Advisor for Crew 1150. Some of you may know me from the Boy Scout Troop or the Christmas Tree Lot sales. I would like to tell you a little about me, and why we formed this Crew.

I have been involved in the Boy Scout Program for over 12 years. I am an Assistant Scoutmaster with Troop 1150. I am also our Troop’s Camping Merit Badge and First Aid Merit Badge Councilor. I am the Chapter Advisor for the Colonial Chapter of the Order of the Arrow - BSA’s Honor Camper Society. I am on the Colonial District Training Team. In my scouting past, I have been a Den Leader, a Pack Committee member, the District Pinewood Derby Chair, and a Troop Committee member. I am fully trained as an adult Boy Scout Leader, with additional training and certification in First Aid, CPR (with AED), and Wilderness First Aid. I am also an NRA certified Range Safety Officer.

We formed the Crew primarily to keep our older boys in the troop active in Scouting. As you will read elsewhere on this flyer, Venturing is about programs for older youth. While we had considered forming just a venturing patrol within the Troop, Bill Yehle (CUMC’s Chartered Organization Representative) thought the Venturing program would be a good asset for the youth of the Church. I agreed with him, and we started on the paperwork. By the end of December 2006 we were official.

Boy Scouting revolves around a concept known as ‘boy-run-boy-lead,’ which means that among other things, the Boy Scouts run the troop, plan and conduct meetings and outings, and train the younger scouts. Venturing takes the boy-run-boy-lead concept even further. In Venturing, they even decide what their Crew is about – Venturing Crews tend to have a program focus, such as SCUBA, equestrian, rock climbing, caving, or the all-purpose high-adventure focus.

Our youth have decided that one of our primary program areas will be shooting sports (trap shooting, rifle and pistol competitions, etc.). One of the main reasons they chose shooting sports is that as Boy Scouts (and here there is a distinct difference between Boy Scouts and Venture Scouts) they are only allowed to shoot rim fire rifles, air rifles, or small gauge shotguns, and primarily only at BSA camping facilities (such as Scout Summer Camp). Venture Scouts are allowed a much broader range of shooting opportunities and locations.

But that does not mean that is all we are doing. Now that most of the administrative setup is complete, we will be holding our first meetings to determine what else the young men and women of our Crew would like to do. We envision, as in Boy Scouting, an active outdoor program; for example, camping out while attending a trap shooting competition. I invite you to attend our meetings, and help make this Venturing Crew truly ours.

Finally, in the eyes of the Boy Scouts of America, we are a separate Unit, with our own adult leaders and Committee, separate from the Boy Scout Troop. To not detract from the Boy Scout program, we as a Crew are looking for new adults to join us as Advisors, Committee Members, or Consultants, so that our adults who support the Troop are not pulling double duty. Many hands make light work.

Sincerely,

Tony Moller - Crew Advisor
